We recently had the opportunity to edit a case study for Time Warner’s “Connect A Million Minds” campaign. The goal was to spotlight a fun and innovative project that will get kids excited about learning STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects. Microsoft’s Project Natal for Xbox 360 was the project of choice and it actually got our editors excited about going back to school too! A completely controllerless video game interface, Natal works off infrared sensors that recognize body motion and even facial expressions. As they say on the Project Natal team, “You are the controller.” Not only is Natal revolutionary, but it also shows how the gaming industry is moving an entire computer industry forward. At TPS we’re really excited about the potential of this cutting edge technology and we hope the kids watching will be as excited about it as we are. Can’t wait to get our hands on a Natal when they hit the streets in late 2010! Check out the clip below and let us know what you think.

For the past two seasons of Heroes airing on NBC, TPS has been responsible for the production and post-production of special features released on the Heroes DVD and Blu-ray collections. We’ve worked closely with executives at both NBC and Heroes to design features that best highlight the season in a fun, hip style and that brings audiences closer to the show.

Our process begins with presenting NBC and the executive producers of Heroes concepts for special features. Once approved, the TPS team and the Heroes production crew coordinate details of the DVD production. All concepts include production, graphic treatments and post-production workflows.

Production for DVD / Blu-ray special features for a television series is a timely process. Our crews are constantly adapting to the Heroes production schedule and the availability of talent. Once on set we shoot low profile HD cameras such as the Sony EX1 which allows our crews to get closer to the action and also keeps our presence to a minimum.

Due to the amount of content produced, post-production is always fast and needs a solid team of editors and assistants to meet delivery deadlines. TPS uses up to five editors per season with two creative directors managing story and aesthetic. Finishing is done in house with two online editors mastering to NBC Universal specs.

Overall this has been a great gig for TPS. We’ve had great reviews by critics and more importantly the fans. We appreciate the hospitality of the Heroes production crew and especially creator Tim Kring and Executive Producers Dennis Hammer and Allan Arkush. We also can’t forget to say thanks to Julie Harter at NBC and ‘The Mighty Foz” at Heroes for all the support and hard work!

The following are excerpts of segments released on DVD and Blu-ray.

Produced by Focus Features and Universal Pictures, TPS was hired to produce two segments for the DVD / Blu-ray release of Talk to Me.

Inspired by a true story, Don Cheadle plays the famous Washington DC radio deejay Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene, who in the 60’s and 70’s “told it like it was.” At a time when social and political issues where at the forefront of our communities and soul music was singing of change, Petey Greene became the voice of the people. An ex-convict and hustler “Petey” shocked the community by saying the things we all wish we could say. Director Kassi Lemmons, writer / director of Eve’s Bayou, tells an inspirational story that’s filled with music and fashion of the time, supported by actors Chiwetel Ejifor, Taraji P. Henson, Cedric the Entertainer and Martin Sheen.

Here’s the run down on the segments we produced: “Who is Petey Greene” tells the story of the real Petey Greene from the actors and crew prospective. Discussions include the timing of Petey Greene and his influence on the DC community and shock radio. “Recreating P-Town” covers the production design, costume and music of Talk To Me. Kassi Lemmons hired a great staff that focused tons of detail into recreating an era that we only wish we could relive. Our editors often dressed up in tight red velour during edits to get into the groove, which also influenced some really cool transition graphics.

TPS produced a special feature for the 1987 feature film Harry and Henderson’s. This was a surprise opportunity for us to meet one of the industries most influential artists Rick Baker.

Rick is an eight-time Academy Award winner for Special Make Up FX. His resume extends from An American Werewolf In London, Planet Of The Apes, The Nutty Professor, Men In Black and of course Harry and the Henderson’s.

Here’s our approach to the segment: We managed to get our hands on some old VHS footage of Rick designing Harry back in 1986. This footage is classic and highlights Rick’s artistry, design and mechanical engineering skills along with great footage of Kevin Peter Hall who played Harry and John Lithgow on set shooting scenes. We then met with Bill Dear director of Harry and Henderson’s at his Santa Barbara ranch. Bill talked about how Harry came about and how he searched out Rick to design Harry. We then contacted Rick and arranged a meeting at his studio. When we arrived Rick lead us into the trophy room were his prized creations are on display. There were set scenes with characters from Men In Black, a life size Ed Wood that looked like he would move at any moment and Mighty Joe Young was sitting, all 15 to 20 feet of him. When we asked Rick about some of his favorite characters and designs, in the back of the room surrounded by Planet Of The Apes was “Harry” from Harry and The Henderson’s. Rick won the Academy Award in 1987 for Harry’s design and says it’s always been one of his favorite characters. It was inspiring for our crew to have had the opportunity to sit and talk with someone who has given so much to the industry. Thanks Bill and Rick!

A note on our intro into the segment: We thought it would be a great idea to spoof the mythology of Sasquatch, so we did. We rented a gorilla suite and shot footage of Sasquatch appearing around town cut with sound-bites from neighbors who spotted to the creature. We then hired a couple of comedy actors that Bill Dear knows to do a doctor / newscaster bit and there you have it, fun, light and a good intro into a warm hearted story.

The following are a couple of excerpts from the segment.

Taxi Driver came to us by way of the DZN Group and Greg Carson. TPS was hired to do creative and offline edits for the 20th Anniversary release of Taxi Driver directed by Martin Scorsese. Interviews include Oliver Stone, Michael Chapman, Roger Corman, Robert DeNiro all giving insight to Marty’s filmmaking inspiration. Also included are segments covering the writing of Taxi Driver by Paul Schrader, producing Taxi Driver by Michael Phillips and a segment featuring real life Taxi Cab drivers of New York and there experiences as “cabbies” during the 70’s.

Overall the 20th anniversary release of Taxi Driver is a great filmmaking 101 course with great inspiration for young filmmakers, writers and producers.

The Post Studio was hired as the creative team to design the A/V marketing campaign for Everyone’s Hero. The project consisted of script explorations for theatrical trailers and television spots and included postproduction editorial with multiple testing and focus group revisions.

TPS also worked on Michael Bay’s remake of Amityville Horror staring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George. Over 2 hours of content was produced for the DVD, which include great “Behind the Scenes” alternate angle sequences. One of our favorite features is called “Supernatural Homicide” and features the real life Amityville police chief, chief medical examiner and a parapsychic, who where first to arrive at the actual Defeo murder crime scene.

TPS produced the special features for the 1st season DVD release of Crossing Jordan for NBC. This was our first introduction to Tim Kring, Dennis Hammer and Allan Arkush.

We had a bit of a dilemma deciding what original content to feature since the season was so long ago and there was no on set footage or any other materiel to play with. We ultimately decided to do a series of multi-camera conversation segments with cast members and producers. As usual scheduling and locations would prove to be a hurdle but with Allan Arkush as are host we were able to pull off some really cool conversation segments.

Here’s how the segments shaped up: We had in mind to bring in all the cast members to do a reunion style interview, but with Jill Hennessy expecting a child in New York and Miguel Ferrer shooting Bionic Women in Canada, scheduling didn’t work out. So Allan and the TPS crew flew to New York to do a sit down conversation featuring Jill and Allan at the famous Patsy’s restaurant. (How we ended up at Patsy’s is another story) Then we flew back to LA and shot a conversation at Eat’s on Sunset Blvd. with Ravi Kapoor, Steve Valentine, Kathryn Hahn and Allan. Then at the last minute Miguel had a break from Bionic Women and we shot a conversation with Allan, Tim Kring and Miguel Ferrer. And last but not least we shot a conversation with Dennis Hammer, Tim Kring and Allan Arkush to wrap it all up.

The result was a very well rounded series of fun, informative conversations about the cast and crew of Crossing Jordan. There were lots of laughs that the fans found entertaining and yes even a few tears were shed.

We were lucky to have Allan Arkush as our host. He was shooting DVD segments while he was producing and directing Heroes. Where he gets the energy is beyond us. Thanks Allan!

The following are excerpts from two of the segments featured on the DVD.

Produced by Focus Features and Universal Pictures. TPS and Craig Updike of NBC Universal produced 2 segments for DVD and Blu-ray. “Secrets and Stories” uncovers the truth of the “Vory V Zakone” and “Marked for Life” describes the nature of tattooing within the Russian mafia.

“Eastern Promises” takes place in London and explores the dark underworld of the Vory V Zakone (Russian Mafia). Viggo Mortensen plays Nikolai, the right hand man of an out-of-control crime boss son played by Vincent Cassel. When a midwife Anna, played by Naomi Watts, tries reuniting a baby with his Russian family, the promises of crime boss Semoyer, played by Armin Mueller Stahl, are unraveled. “Eastern Promises” exposes the brutal violence and deceit of organized crime as the film explores the psyche, physicality, and fortunes of a man whose true nature may never be revealed.

Eastern Promises is written by Steve Knight (Academy Award nominated screenwriter of “Dirty Pretty Things”) and re-teams director David Cronenberg with “A History of Violence” leading man Viggo Mortensen, who received an Oscar nomination for his role.

The Post Studio created the special feature titled “All the Pieces Together” for the DVD release. The segment features Katie Holmes, Oliver Platt and other actors commenting on the story and it’s premise. The segment also features a heart felt interview with writer / director Peter Hedges and his inspiration for writing the story. Hedges says the inspiration for his screenplay was twofold — his mother’s battle with and death from cancer, and a true story about a group of friends whose plans to prepare a communal Thanksgiving dinner were thwarted by a broken stove.

Heroes Season 3 was recently released on DVD and Blu-ray. We had a great time working with the crew documenting their production antics and then releasing the footage as special features on the disk sets. What a great gig! In this season we turned the camera and highlighted the crew that brings the show to life. From stunt coordinator Tim Gilbert to the Make Up FX artists at Optic Nerve to Emmy Nominated Stargate Visual FX, we packed the disks. We shot tons of great “fly-on-the-wall” style footage of the productions and really tried to bring the audience closer to the action. One of the highlights was shooting promos for the upcoming fourth season to be featured on BD-Live. BD-Live is a new distribution pipeline utilizing Blu-ray technology that allows you to access special features via a Blu-ray player and an Internet connection. This was a super cool season and we hope you get a chance to check it out.

We were recently invited to the X Games to shoot a profile on Super Moto and Flat Track racer Matt Burton. No relation to our Don Burton. These guys are insane, bumping bars on the pavement then flying into the stadium catching air in the dirt. It was an exciting event to film. We shot the event in HD and managed to move around the track unscathed. The overall pitch was to showcase racer Matt Burton at his best. He’s one of the leading privateers on the racing circuit and being from Iowa needs all the exposure he could get. We’ll have a couple of clips to show soon and will be posting more info on Matt and the racing scene soon.

The Post Studio – We launched our new site ! We’ll be keeping you up to date on all our adventures in the industry and hopefully inspire you share your comments or ideas. As you may know we’re a production and post-production studio specializing in creative content for the entertainment and motion picture industry. We’ve been doing it for a long time. Mike our Exec Producer actually worked on the original Matrix DVD special features with Mr. Jonathan Gaines as an editor way back when DVD’s were just a small shelf at Blockbuster. We’ve come a long way since then and we are excited about the future of new media entertainment and advertising. We have a cool production crew well versed with working on set and in live events. Our post-production is robust and always online, but most importantly we have ideas. We hope you keep checking back and we look forward to meeting you soon!
